When he made note of the Medorian nobility, she looked a bit concerned. "Sounds like I might have my work cut out for me," she murmured. "Well, then. Let's go. We'll put as much romance as we can into this one. Then really crank it up when we get back to Earth."

"Very few; I'm afraid the people are still suffering."

There had to be a way. "The people here, they look like you .right?" Maybe they could take the people to earth.

"A little less handsome, perhaps." He tried a teasing smile, but... it was weak.

She held his hand. "If there really is no way to fix it, maybe we can move everyone somewhere else."

"And where would I find enough land for them all?" he asked her.

"How many are there?"

"A few thousand; at the very least."

She felt her heart sink more. There had to be a way to save them.

"They need land, Stephanie," he whispered. "And worse, they need power. Every one of them is a magic user - and any one member of the noble families could decimate a city if they took the mind to do it. The life of a refugee would hardly suit them."

"And nothing worked? What are they going to do if there's no recovery?"

"The same thing they've been done for the last few hundred years," he told her. "The nobles hold the oases's; the common people work on them in return for places to live; the disenfranchised live in the wastelands and mutter rebellion; and the ruler desperately struggles to stop it all from exploding."

He sighed.

"It's not the best system; but I'm having some trouble finding a way around it."

"How do the oasis work?" She asked.

"Little patches of usable land; like this."

"Is there a way for you to use your magic to take a piece of the usable land and integrate it to the wasteland? So that the usable land could infect and maybe convert the rest?" She asked.

"Ingenius in theory; but unlikely in practice; the oases were the places least affected; exposing them would only destroy what's left."

"Not all of it. Maybe a small piece?"

"Intriguing; but I'm not sure it would work in this case..."

She squeezed his hand, hoping they'd find something.

"...We'll figure something out; there's bound to some world we can move them."

"He knows about the other planets. So maybe there will be one that isn't occupied."

He showed his thanks with a kiss, wrapping arms about her.

"We should head back."
