When he made note of the Medorian nobility, she looked a bit concerned. "Sounds like I might have my work cut out for me," she murmured. "Well, then. Let's go. We'll put as much romance as we can into this one. Then really crank it up when we get back to Earth."

"That would be the problem," he whispered, glancing away. "So far as anyone can tell, it can't be rebuilt."

"What? Why? Are the resources that depleted?" she asked softly.

"It's not the resources," he told her. "...I'll have to show you."

"Show me, then," she replied softly.

He would offer her his hand - kissing it gently before leading her down the hill, down a little further - and disappearing behind a wall of illusion.

She took his hand, following. "...Nathaniel?" The illusion disappeared.

Wasteland stretched before them - cracked earth, without a single speck of vegetation growing on its surface. "It covers ninety percent of Medoria. From what I've been told, it was some form of war, or attack; though no one's ever been entirely certain."

She surveyed the land. "Do you have agriculturalists? Farmers? Scientists to find out what happened to the soil?"

"A rather potent piece of magic," he told her, sighing faintly, "And it isn't just the earth; creatures mutate - spells fail. Electronic devices as well." He sighed.

"There's gotta be something." Steph thought of what sort of technologies they had.

"Someone's managed a blade of grass or two, now and again," he admitted. "But we haven't been strong enough to make it anything but wastelands."

"Is that using your technology or ours?" she asked.

"Both; yours was... less than helpful with this place," he admitted. "It had a tendency to explode here."

Her heart broke a little at that. "What if we got Thor or Tony to help out?"

"They could try, I suppose..."

What are done other options?" She asked.

"Very few; I'm afraid the people are still suffering."

There had to be a way. "The people here, they look like you .right?" Maybe they could take the people to earth.

"A little less handsome, perhaps." He tried a teasing smile, but... it was weak.

She held his hand. "If there really is no way to fix it, maybe we can move everyone somewhere else."

"And where would I find enough land for them all?" he asked her.

"How many are there?"

"A few thousand; at the very least."

She felt her heart sink more. There had to be a way to save them.

"They need land, Stephanie," he whispered. "And worse, they need power. Every one of them is a magic user - and any one member of the noble families could decimate a city if they took the mind to do it. The life of a refugee would hardly suit them."
