Who's strong and bra--what war?

Stephanie Barnes hummed to herself as she made her way home from the grocery store. It was nice that Bucky had to go to a conference for a little bit, it let her catch up on things like the cleaning and the shopping, her paintings. What a wonderfully normal day.

She greeted their neighbors as she passed by with a smile. She actually was healthier now as an adult than she was as a child.

"As much as I can be. Yeah. I won't really know for sure til I put it to the test, unfortunately."

That got her worried. "Honey, are you...some part of a government thing?" she asked carefully.

"Me? No...definitely not." She shakes her head before hesitating. Should she....?

"My mom was, though."

Klaxons fired off in her head. "Miss, are you...?"

"Am I what?"

Well, what was the polite way of asking? "Do you have a condition, sweetheart?"

"Like am I crazy or like am I a mutant? Cause I've used condition for both. I have a friend...love her to pieces...but she's batshit insane...bipolar to the extreme...we refer to that as her 'condition'. I'm neither, though. My mom worked for the military."

A small sigh of relief. "Well that's not all that unheard of. Just because your mom's been in the military doesn't mean you need to jump right in and fight with the boys."

She shrugged. "Mom and Dad are both kind of big heroes...so yeah...I do."

Her eyebrows reached her hairline. "Heroes? Who are they?"

Crap. How did she explain this? "Uh...well...they went by nicknames during...Captain America and Winter Soldier...no idea what they mean...put I know people still call them that."

"I'vE never heard of them."

"Probably a local thing, then."

She busied herself a little then wiped her hands on the dish towel, watching the stranger in the home. "You look really familiar though."

"I guess I just have one of those faces?" She wanted to tell her...mostly because she wasn't quite sure HOW she was getting home...if she even could get home. She had just kind of crash landed here.

Steph wasn't buying it this time. "You know you look a lot like Bucky's sister. Are you sure you're not in any relation to Rebecca Barnes?"

Of course she was. She was her aunt. "Nope."

:You should meet her, then. You're a dead ringer for her. Oh I wish Bucky were home, maybe he would be able to tell better than I can."

"Maybe one day I will..." This was still all so surreal. "So what do you do?"

"Me? Oh I teach art at the local school to kids," Steph beamed. "So I've got my own studio here. My honey used the spare room to turn it into a place for me to paint. But my best stuff is when I'm in the living room and I could just jump up and paint if the inspiration strikes."

"Soon as dinner's all cooked up, I can show you. I went to art school and it just made all the difference."

"I have absolutely no artistic talent. Stick people and Q cats are as far as I go..."

"Oh now, I don't believe that. Maybe I could help you a little after dinner. Drawing's one of the easiest things ever," she smiled.

"That would be great. But just remember...I warned you." No, really, Steph. Sad as it may be...art is not your daughter's strong point.
